Handing a Door

Posted:  Jan 07, 2016
One more thing that I never thought about before I got into the hardware business – the “handing” of a door. That’s right, the way a door is hung in a frame (hinge on the right vs. hinge on the left) and whether a door opens towards you or away from you is so important that there is special terminology used to describe it.

On the surface of things, this seems like a “not my problem” issue.  But handing is one of the first things taught and forms the basis of so much other hardware – hinges, locks, closers.  Not to mention construction issues for the room.  It is also a huge code consideration.

For the want of a nail, a shoe was lost, and for want of a shoe, the war was lost.  Handing is important!
